Bathroom Renovation: replacing damaged tiles

Ceramic tiles are considered to be one of the more durable materials. But even they are damaged. The floors usually when you drop a heavy object on them, on the walls - due to ground movement. Fortunately, contrary to popular opinion, the exchange is fairly easy. This work could well be carried out every home craftsman.
Even the most durable tiles are vulnerable to rupture. Accidentally abandoned heavy and edgy subject or accidental impact, causing irreparable damage to the enamel.

Floor tiles are usually mechanical damage. The reasons for the formation of cracks may be other - non-uniform distribution of the adhesive under the tiles (especially when we have a large plate), no joints or too small gap between the plates and extensible substrate (for example, with underfloor heating). The exchange board but you do not need to call expert - just the tools (hammer, chisel and scraper), the appropriate adhesive and grout.

But first, let's see if we have spare tiles. This is the best situation because I will be the same shade, the authorities purchased generally differ in color (often even very clearly).

What the adhesive?

Most are universal cement mortar for mixing with water. Such measures are suitable for most walls and floors. It should be noted, however, that our tiles do not require mortar specifically designed for the cladding. This is due to differences between the individual plates. For example, allow the glue to glue tiles large and heavy plates, without the risk of subsidence of the walls. They also have an extended time to correct the position of tiles, making them easy to plumbing or leveling.

Regardless of the type of mortar,'s check on the substrate can be used and applied. On equal ground thin enough glue, while the uneven surfaces and for fixing tiles with highly profiled bottom thick mortar used.

Remember, too, that the underfloor heating is used mortar with increased flexibility and grip. And if we care about time (for example, repair the lining of the floor), let us choose a quick-drying grout (binds after 4 hours).

Substrate Preparation

First, remove the grout from the damaged circuit board. This operation can be done with a chisel or a stylus. You can also use the grinding plates to drill or grinder. Then we break a plate, hitting with a hammer in the middle part (this is the special care not to damage adjacent) and remove the broken pieces.

The next step is grinding or hacking off the old mortar from the ground to make way for a new layer of glue (usually has a thickness of 3-5 mm). Then, using a brush and a vacuum cleaner remove any dirt. If you are on the ground there millimeter defects, you must align the leveling mortar. Before gluing the new tile surface should be primed to strengthen its structure.
